Default Fear of Driving in the dark

hi guys,

I'm new to this site.

A few yrs back something happened which has effected my day to day life and I need to do something to get over it.

I have not driven in the dark on my own now for 2 yrs.

September 2006 I was driving on my own at night when I came over feeling funny, I was sweating and panicing. I felt as if someone was in the car with me (not human, more spirit). Now I know this must be daft. This really shock me up, but I carried on driving in the dark for a few weeks, but then I had a similar situation on the same peice of road. Since then I have not driven once on my own in the dark.

I have changed jobs so that I dont drive in the dark, but now I want to sort my head out.

I know this is not real (well I think so), but I am terrified it will happen again, I was and still am truely petrified. I have booked myself on a hypnotherapy session to see if I can get over it.

Anyone else tried hypnotherapy? Does it work for these kind of things?

What else can I do to get over it.

Regards

Kev

Hi Kev,

I think there might be somthing underlying the fear of the thing you cannot see, the power you cannot control.
We had a post about hypnosis just last week, it may or may not help. I think you should try find out what the underlying problem is. Fear does not come from nowhere, and it might be something affecting you, that you seem to have long forgotten, only your subconcious has not.

All the best!

thanks for the reply.

The strange thing is I used to drive for a living so driving in the dark was never a problem in the slightest.

I have always been scared of spirit/ghosts and have often felt presences or what I felt as their presence, if there is such things, however this is now playing havok in my mind. But I dont understand where and how this fear has come about.

I now have a new job which will mean driving home in the dark when the nights draw in, so I need to get this sorted.

In the last 2 yrs I have noticed other forms of anxiety coming into my life. I worry constantly about my wife driving on her own and having an accident. I worry about needing the loo in awkward situations, like driving on motorways or in traffic or at the hairdressers, all things when things are out of my control. Ihave also notice a little OCD, like checking the iron is turned of 2-3 times after use (I even take a photo on my phone so I can check the picture if worried).

I hope hypnotherapy helps,

Hi Kev,

I know what you are speaking of. The feeling of something (or someone ) present that you cannot see. I had that a lot , but the most overwhelming one was at my friend house in Germany. The house was half new and half old. First her room was in the new half and I loved to be there. Later she moved her sitting room to the old half and I always felt cold in there, no matter how warm it was and I felt watched. My friend then told me of noises in the night. Noises from rooms which had long been demolished. A squeeky door when there was no draft or while the door was shut, her dead cat jumping on her bed (and leaving an impression in the bedding!)... Her father used to have his bedroom that side of the house and reported similar events at night... Later we found out that under the Nazis the old half used to be a prison for forced labourors. Come to your own conclusion, but I now believe, that some things that we cannot explain may exist.

For some reason I am less sensitive for those things now. I still pick up the energy when I come into a house, but I don't have the feeling to have night-time visitors much. Maybe we have to be in a certain set of mind and emotion for those presences and energies to be able to approach us. Well, enough spooky things now, usually they are harmless anyway.

I also have the problem that I have to check everything: windows closed, cooker switched off, door locked. In one of my anxiety books the advice was simple: trust yourself! Well, this is certainly the reason for this odd behaviour: somewhere in a corner of my head I doubt myself, that is why have to check again and again. So I now follow a ceratain order I check things in. I stick to the order, check only the things that can turn dangerous if not left in a certain way and I check everything only once! I don't allow myself to go back and check again or check other things, which is especially hard when I am stressed. As long as I stick to the order, I don't need to worry. I know I have done it properly. It really gave me the experience and the knowledge, that I can trust myself and the work I am doing.

I think setting up a routine like this can help you, too. It may well be connected the checking thing and the spooky experiences, it seemed to have been for me at least. When you stick to your routine you will learn to trust yourself, because you just know you have done it properly. Once you trust yourself, you will be more relaxed about everything and even driving at night will be no troubles.

Have a relaxed day!
