Squatbetty 15-08-08, 06:59 PM Hi all :)
Anyone watching the Olympics?
I haven't watched much so far but will be now the "proper" events have started (athletics)!
rabidbadger 15-08-08, 11:59 PM I'm going to try and stay awake to watch Becky Adlington try for her second gold in the swimming. I think the race is about 2:30am.

Squatbetty 16-08-08, 06:57 PM She was fantastic - didn't stay up for it though I'm afraid, watched it this morning. Watched the 100m mens final - how amazing was that!? Don't think I've ever seen anyone win an Olympic gold medal & break the world record in such a laid back, cool way!
rabidbadger 17-08-08, 12:58 AM Rebecca Adlington is a hero. She just took the piss out of eveyone else in the pool. She looks so happy when she has won. That's what the olympics is about (I'm biased because I used to go to the same club here in Nottingham).
It's been a great day for the cyclists too - and we're guaranteed a gold and silver tomorrow with the all Brit final when Wendy Houvenhagel goes against Rebecca Romero in the pursuit.
I did feel very sorry for Kelly Sotherton today. I expected better from her and I think she did too.
race-demon 17-08-08, 07:20 AM were doing well, but i dont get why we have the olympics, its more logical (do a spock voice now.) in the sence that football serves no purpose at all, whereas javelin swimming running etc imitates what we would have done centurys ago as cave men, hunting for food, running away so we dont become it....
makes sence, i dont think caveman would of said "hey tiger, fancy a kickaround?"
so no real point to it nowadays, we have cars, we have lifts, our minds are being used more so we can use our bodies less because its easier.
so what if someone can run 2km...not many other people can, the fact theres a bike next to them kinda says summin, WHY.
its sports day for adults, it serves no other purpose than endorsements and the pride of the 1 person winning a (as ive mentioned, pointless) medal, if the athletes turned thier vigor and energy into mechanics, technology or something the world would be more developed and the cars we drove to work (as opposed to run say) would be cleaner.....
sorry i sound like a nit picker but ill hold my hands up if i can get 1/2 reasons why we have the olympics, i admire the people, i dont admire the event
i love clarkson, i love big v8's and 15psi turbos and big power....but i like opera too, so dont label me on what ive said...
and badger you have a very good point and im enlightened now
just re-done my spelling, i hate bad spelling but i also hate critics so thought it better not to be one...
rabidbadger 17-08-08, 01:13 PM Hi race-demon
If people only did what they needed to do to survive, nobody would watch television or bake cakes or listen to music or go on holiday.
Some olympic events have emerged from fun and recreation - which is a vital part of everyone's life.

Chris V 18-08-08, 08:36 PM It must take a lot of commitment to be dedicated to just one sport. I mean, some of these atheletes are probably good at different things, but they realise that they're best at eg. archery, swimming, so they only concentrate on that discipline, & only that discipline. It must take commitment, knowing that you have to practice the same sport day in, day out, to get the best in the world at it, even though that wasn't your chosen ambition.
Maybe Micheal Phelps's ambition was to be a pro basketball/baseball player when he was younger??! I wanted to be a pro-golfer myself, I got my handicap down to 15. It's too late now, I'll be 34 in a few hours.
rabidbadger 19-08-08, 12:50 AM Happy birthday Chris
Chris
Chris V 19-08-08, 06:00 AM Thanks. 34 today!

Chris V 23-08-08, 06:33 PM Yes, it is good news to me. I know I shouldn't write like this, but the next few years don't matter. I have to get through life until I'm 40-years-old & can go back to driving, going abroad, mentally O.K. again, having got over my terrible anxiety/depression.
Thnaks, Race_Demon, that's good news (Life begins at 40), I've just got to hang in there.:)
