The antidepressant drug Prozac and its generic equivalents apparently provide no help in preventing people who have anorexia from relapsing after they have been treated, a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates. There was “absolutely no difference” between a control group of women who took a placebo and those who received one of the antidepressants, the study's leader researcher said. He concluded that “the common practice of prescribing antidepressant medication is unlikely to provide substantial benefit for most patients with anorexia nervosa.” Physicians should instead concentrate on “psychological and behavioral interventions.” (Reuters (http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=healthNews&storyID=2006-06-13T200351Z_01_N13423787_RTRUKOC_0_US-ANOREXIA.xml), 6/14/06)
