Nicotine-like Substance May Improve Cognitive Functioning in People Who Have Schizophrenia:

University of Colorado researchers found that a substance dubbed DMXB-A, which has nicotine-like properties, may help improve the mental functioning of people who have schizophrenia. Many people who have the disorder also smoke heavily as an attempt to “self-medicate,” many researchers suggest, because the brain receptors, which are affected by nicotine, are dysfunctional in people with schizophrenia. In a small study, which appeared in the Archives of General Psychiatry, people who took DMXB-A along with their antipsychotic medications reported “significant neurocognitive improvement.” (Reuters (http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=healthNews&storyID=2006-06-08T121451Z_01_COL844076_RTRUKOC_0_US-COGNITION-SCHIZOPHRENIA.xml), 6/8/06)
