For the first time in the United Kingdom, more teenage girls engage in binge drinking than teenage boys, and are now the second-most likely teen girls in Europe to binge drink, a British Institute of Alcohol Studies research effort reveals (http://www.ias.org.uk/newsroom/pressreleases/press010606.html). Twenty-nine percent of British teen girls in 2003 engaged in binge drinking, compared with 26 percent of teen boys. Only Irish teen girls were more likely to binge drink among Europeans girls, according to the Institute's study. British adults were also among the most Europeans of their age group to binge drink. Alcohol problems cost European counties about 125 billion euros annually.
