Moderate Stress Proves Unharmful to Pregnancies

In refuting past studies with “many flaws,” Johns Hopkins University researchers report in a Child Development study that a moderate amount of stress and anxiety experienced by other physically and emotionally healthy pregnant women does not harm their developing fetuses and may actually prove to be beneficial. The researchers found that children born to women who felt some stress and anxiety during pregnancy were somewhat more advanced at age 2 in mental and motor development than other toddlers. Although the cause of this advanced development could be the effects of stress hormones on a fetus' development, women who feel stressed may also just be more prone to challenge their children to develop faster. Either way, no negative effects were found.
