A friend of mine recently bought the linden method and she mentioned that in the book it read that we cause ourselves to be anxious and have apanic attacks. now i don't know wether it was ment for good or for bad that this is written but i can say yes i do know that we can make our selves anxiuos and that we can make things happen i understand that. but the way it portrays is that its our own fault why we are like this . nobody wants to be anxious or have panic attacks why would we . certainly dont have anything to gain by it and i certainly dont enjoy it being in fear of nothing. so please charles if you are reading this please explain by what you mean't in the book.

We do not deliberatly cause ourselves to have anxiety or panic.
I believe that originally some stressor caused us to respond with a panic attack, leaving us with fear of having another one, hence the anxiety, phobias. Nor do I think we deliberatly say lets be anxious or lets just have a panic attack. But I do think the way in which we respond to the symptoms/sensations is what keeps it going. we believe we are in danger when no danger exists. It then becomes an automatic response not a deliberate one. We can turn this around with lots of practice and time and using different techneques. It is our response no one is doing this too us, therefore techneqnically we do this to ourselves.

I just want to explain what I think your friend read in The Linden Method manual, although Lisa did a fine job above!
We have a conscious and subconscious mind, as you know. The conscious mind can be controlled. The subconscious mind is out of our 'direct' control, it is what causes our hearts to beat, our digestion to continue and other 'autonomic' actions over which we have no control.
When we experience anxiety disorder our brains become 'reset' at this higher level of anxiety, causing us to behave anxiously and experience the symptoms and thoughts we associate with the condition.
IF we had understanding of exactly what was happening in our bodies (and how harmless it actually is), at this point, we would be able to override the anxiety with logic and calm, but we don't.
Anxiety leads to more anxiety, the cycle begins and is very difficult to stop unless you have the knowledge of how to do it.
THEN, we fall into an anxious behavioural pattern... we modify our daily routines and behaviours to accomodate the anxiety and as we do, we become more and more restricted and it starts to take less for us to feel anxious.
As the anxiety grows, we become more anxious which causes more symptoms, which makes us more anxious and so on!
We then go to the doctor, who prescribes something completely inappropriate and so the cycle continues.
We have control, over this! We might not feel in control, we might not know how to do it, we might be incredibly scared, but ultimately, YOU have a choice of how you want to perceive your anxiety and what you want to do about it.
Why? Because anxiety is NOT a mental or physical illness... it is caused by the continuous cycle of anxious behaviour that you consciously decide to support through behaviour, avoidance of 'normal' routines and activities.
The subconscious mind continues to behave this way because WE tell it to, through our behaviour!! It becomes instinctual... an anxious habit is formed.
This does not mean that you WANT to be anxious... it means that you don't have the tools you need and the understanding or the 'know how' to stop this cycle.
I have helped tens of thousands to do exactly this... and it works because it is the ONLY way you can reset your anxiety back down to a normal level... the only way to become anxiety free again is to go through THIS process. It is the process that ALL recovered sufferers have been through. Let me liken this to something simple. Let's say you want to learn to play the guitar. You are born unable to do so because you don't have the subconsciously stored knowledge that enables you to. In order for your fingers and hands to know where to move in order to create the correct notes, you have to practice. Slowly at first, you learn the physical movements which become deeply stored in your subconscious, enabling you to pull that knowledge quickly from your mind and play a tune. The more you practice, the better you get. You have programmed your mind to react in a certain way through behaviour.

thank you charles for you honest reply i can understand by reading this what you mean .this person obviously miss understood the reading of it wether she was trying to scare me off i dont know, but i do know my own mind and how to make my own dissions. she asnt put me off at all i just wanted to know what was ment by it, :) .for some reason she was affended by it . i have read so much about anxiety on the net that i have become to understand it. my gp said it was because i have had a bad childhood which i did and that is why i have bad anxiety and panics today it was learnt behavior is this true?. also charles i was not trying to exploit you or anything like that i'm glad that there is someone out there to help us all. i will be trying your method and thankyou for returning my email too.
