A couple of weaks ago I left for basic training. I thought I was ready and felt fine about it. We stayed in a hotel over night the day before and aside from nervouse butterflies I was ok. I even ate before I went to bed though not much. I woke up in the middle of the night and started getting sick. I started hyper ventilating and could not stop getting sick. I had all the symptoms of a panic attack only it was so severe I lost complete control of my body. They ended up hospitalizing me for hyperventilation syndrom and dehydration from getting sick for a couple hours straight. The moment they took me away in the ambulance and I knew I wasnt getting on that bus for boot-camp I started fealing better. The thing is I really want to go. I signed up for this and it is my future. I want this. I leave again in a couple of weaks for round two. The thing is I'm not affraid of leaving but I'm terrified that I may have another panic attack. I cant take medication because if the military knew I may have a panic attack problem they would discharge me right away. What can I do to prevent it from hapening again. I heard diet and exercise are important. Maybe I am eating something I should not be or doing something I shouldnt do. Please help.

Hi Raina,
What sometimes happens when we are faced with a new either stressful or
very exciting situation, people have an overload of adreneline which the body responds to with exactly the sensations you experienced. You have been diagnosed at the hospital and you know what it is. IT IS NOt DANGEROUS it only feels that way.
What you can do if you feel the sensations arise again is to do deep breathing to calm your body down, listing to music, a relaxation tape or do something physical. Tell yourself the truth This is not Dangerous it is just a sensation and then go about your life.
Good luch

Hi Raina,

I am so sorry you experienced your first panic attack on the eve of one of the most important events in your life.

Being a military mom and wife, I know you can't be classified as having panic disorder, and taking meds for it, and be able to complete your training and career.

You need to look into some other resources, asap. There are a lot of threads on the forum you can browse, but may I suggest you first look at the Linden Method? A lot of people on the forum have sworn by it, and I know they will answer your questions quickly about how long it will take to work, etc. I think even Charles Linden will email you back and give you any advice you might need.

Check out his website: www.panic-anxiety.colm

I know Lisa has used this method and has said it has helped her very much. Perhaps she can provide a little more info for you.

I know you need to overcome this quickly in order to get on with your career; I only wish I could recommend what would work the fastest. Perhaps others will have ideas?

Good luck Raina, let us know how it all works out.
