Mini Horse Lover 15-04-05, 04:47 PM Hello,
I just need some reassurance that the body symptoms I feel are just anxiety. I have burning in my knees, shoulders, arms, chest, back. Sometimes constantly. I sweat at night in bed. I'm light headed all the time. I can't think. I'm spacy. I have a constant underlying feeling of anxiety with periods where it is extreme. I had to quit work for a while a couple of months ago because the anxiety was so high, all I did was pace around and around. Sleep has been really bad since then. I am now on Celexa and I swear it makes some things worse. I am skinny to begin with and I have lost weght. I do use xanex a little too. But I HATE the drugs and want to deal with this on my own but the extreme anxiety was horrible. HELP !!!!!!!!

Hi Liz,
It sounds like symptoms of anxiety....but, I would recommend a thorough physical with your doctor. A lot of hormonal imbalances can cause anxiety, as well as other disorders (i.e., and under-or-overactive thyroid).
They can run you through some routine tests, and then you'll know for sure.
One of things I do know is that anxiety makes the physical symptoms worse, so, put your mind a little at ease by getting the physical.
Medication is not the answer, it is only sympthomatic masking. Anxiety is a habit of thought, a habit of worrying over something like a situation or a thought. Take away the medication and your habit will still be there, sometimes even worse, and the psychological effect of feeling the same and that the meds did not work, will not give you a boost of self-esteem to begin with.
Chemical imbalances do not help anxiety indeed, but I don't think it is ever the direct cause of any bodily manifestation, the thought has to respond to it and perpetuate the cycle. In doing so, you can send all kinds of sensations throughout your body. If the ones you are experiencing are the cause of anxious thinking, I don't know, but it certainly seems connected. You can have a checkup, but don't do check after check, because also there it is VERY easy to get stuck in a cycle, of wanting reassurance on this and that and that and this again, medically. If you are not satisfied with the check of 1 doctor, go to another for a second opinion and a new view, but don't go on doing this.
Greetings, Peter.
I agree that medication masks the underlying problem, but it is sometimes necessary to bring one down from the spiraling, out-of-control anxiety that can cause extreme havoc with your body. Once you're more stable, you can learn techniques to combat the panic and anxiety that are much more effective, and less harmful than drugs.
It is an absolute medical fact that many conditions cause anxiety, check any symptom guide for confirmation. I do agree with Peter in that you shouldn't have to go to zillions of doctors to check yourself out physically, but a lot of routine tests your GP can do, such as a CBC (complete blood count), can rule out any underlying medical causes. One of the interesting facts I came about in my research is that inner-ear disorders cause anxiety. If you have any difficulty with balance and/or coordination, that is a good thing to bring up with your doc. Bring up also any odd symptoms you may have, such as missed heartbeats, any pain, etc. Some of it may be related to the anxiety, but let your doc do the diagnosis.

Allyson, look upon the meds as a very temporary measure to help you through an extremely difficult time. Once you are more in control you can explore other avenues of dealing with the anxiety and panic. There are a lot of good methods that do not use medications, and this forum has lots of great ideas and suggestions.
Keep us posted on how you're doing---we've been there, we do care.
CharlesL 20-04-05, 06:20 PM Meds ceratinly aren't teh long term solution. I have helped over 17000 people defeat this disorder now and, trust me, they all have the same thing in common... NONE of them were cured by meds!
Anxiety is behavioural and responds best to a behavioural method... it'sproven and documented.

Old_Anonymous_Members 25-04-05, 05:15 PM Hello Liz,
I too suffer from anxiety. I had my first attack 7 years ago and my second this past fall, I got a script for Xanax and thought everything would be fine. Well I have been having what seems like one everyday for the past 2 weeks. I have burning chest pain and arm pains. I can't concentrate and am paranoid. I too do not want to be on medication. I prefer to be medication free!
My friend. I have suffered from these symptoms for over half my life, and I am now 44. As long as your doctor has ruled out any other cause for your symptoms... Anxiety and panic is more than likely what it is. Please e-mail me, I can put your mind at ease...When you hear the symptoms I have had and still get...you will not believe it.
God Bless.
