Hello everyone,
I am a 46 year old male who has been successful in conquering many of my fears. I have suffered with panic attacks and generalized anxiety for as far back as I can remember.
For the past 2 years after reading and working with multiple self-help books, I have overcome many of my limitations. I now drive my car (alone), ride in elevators, spend time comfortably alone, shop in malls and most recently I returned to air travel.
I still struggle with one issue. I believe it is a fear of heights. I live in Canada and I enjoy downhill skiing. I made return to this sport after a 10 year sabbatical. What seems to spoil this activity is riding the chairlift. The height off the ground seems to get my adrenaline flowing. Often the chairlift will stop on route to the top of the mountain. This really creates anxiety for me. The longer it remains idle, the closer I get to a full-blown attack. This produces my “what-if” thoughts that seem difficult to control. I am most afraid that I will loose control and jump. Although I am confident that I won’t act on this irrational thought, it still makes my trip on the lift uncomfortable.
I practice my breathing techniques (long deep breaths from the abdomen), identify my negative thought and replace it with a positive one etc.) and still wish I was off the chairlift…now!
I continue to ski because of my passion for the sport, however I really need to get a handle on this.
I believe this is a fear of heights. Does anyone have suggestions that may help?
Thank you,
Buddee.
